The maps were created by British Military Intelligence 9 (MI9) to help downed aircrew and prisoners of war (POWs) escape from enemy-occupied territory.
The original of this Second World War Escape Map was provided to us with thanks to the Canadian War Museum, George Metcalf Archival Collection. The map is in a 1:1,000,000 scale with a single 1:250,000 insert. The areas covered are Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland. Printed in full colour on both sides, these maps provided critical information to escapees. Each reproduction is identified as such on the lower right-hand border of side 43/D to ensure these reproductions cannot be confused with the originals.
