The inspiration for the design of the Maya Blue cover comes from a 1697 edition of Johann Arndt's Paradiesgärtlein (Garden of Paradise), published in Strasbourg, France. The silver filigree was originally created by die cutting a thin metal plate to form a latticed ornament, and elaborate grooves were then meticulously etched into its surface.
