Toronto, an international mecca for business, finance, arts, and culture, is recognized as one of the world's most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities.

With more that 50 percent of residents belonging to a visible minority, and over 160 languages spoken, Toronto's diverse population reflects its role as a prime destination for new Canadians.

Toronto City Hall, opened in 1965, and featured in this design, is one of Toronto's most distinctive landmarks. Viljo Revell's design was selected from over 500 designs, from 42 countries. Revell, a Finnish designer, who died in 1964 before the project was completed, asked that his collaborators, Heikki Castren, Bengt Lundsten, and Seppo Valjus, be listed, along with himself, as the architects.

Indigenous peoples, including the Huron-Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe have travelled through and inhabited the Toronto area for more than 10,000 years. The Mowhawk named the area 'tkaronto', meaning "where there are trees standing in the water."
